Jan Vogt

Computer science in Jena, working student at ZEISS

About me

I’m Jan, from Bad Berka in Thuringia, and I’ve been studying computer science at Friedrich Schiller University Jena since 2024. Since February 2026 I’ve also been working as a student software developer at Carl Zeiss Meditec.

Most of my projects start with a concrete reason – Spesenfuchs and PicHunter, for example, came out of my weekends as a referee. You’ll find a selection of them on this planet.

Riptide

Tsunami simulation

How does a tsunami spread across the ocean? Riptide works it out with a finite-volume solver for the shallow-water equations.

Built as a team with Yannik Köllmann and Mika Brückner, with Riemann solvers for dam-break and other wave scenarios, its own visualisation and Sphinx docs.

Satellites on a 3D globe

More than 12,000 satellites in real time on a globe – with a heat map, the day-night line and a time slider to wind forwards and back.

Built with Unity and Cesium, it runs as WebGL right in the browser.

Use your own solar power

SolarFlow reads a Fronius inverter and, whenever there’s surplus solar power, switches appliances on by priority – so as much of your own power as possible stays in the house.

Expense claims for referees

After every match a referee still has an expense claim to write. Spesenfuchs fetches the fixtures from DFBnet and creates the Word documents for it automatically.

Several referees can use it at once, each with their own account.

Match photos from fupa.net

Paste a link to a match, a gallery or a referee’s profile on fupa.net – PicHunter collects every photo in full resolution, adds kick-off time and venue, and packs it all into a ZIP.

Dungeon crawler

A dungeon crawler in a medieval setting: every dungeon is generated anew, the enemies have their own AI and there are plenty of weapons to try.

Off the screen

When I’m not at my computer, I’m usually on a football pitch with a whistle.

  • Referee in the NOFV Oberliga and the U19 Bundesliga, assistant referee in the Regionalliga
  • On the editorial team of “Die Wurzel”, a maths magazine
  • On the youth council of Bad Berka: town development and ISEK workshops

Awards

A few prizes from school, from olympiads and from the football pitch.
